...vs. "Hergé's Adventures..."

For years, the only TV adaptations of the Tintin books that I knew was the Belgian series "Hergé's Adventures of Tintin", which often changed entire plot lines*. Many years later, "The Adventures of Tintin" aired on TV. The books' hardcore fans apparently prefer this one since it stays more faithful to the books. I actually prefer the older series, mainly because of the voice that they gave Capt. Haddock. Still, both series are pretty fun. As always, Tintin is the rational character, with Snowy staying faithful to him; Haddock is the grouchy, impulsive one; Prof. Calculus is full of himself, with his hearing problem causing embarrassing situations; Thomson and Thompson bumble their way through every case (imagine having two of Insp. Clouseau); and Bianca Castafiore irritates everyone. Pretty fun.

The live-action adaptations were "Tintin and the Golden Fleece" and "Tintin and the Blue Oranges", which to my knowledge have never gotten released on DVD, as has the earlier animated series (why do so many crummy movies get special edition DVDs while the Tintin adaptations haven't gotten any releases?). I'll be eager to see what Steven Spielberg does with the upcoming adaptation of "Secret of the Unicorn".

*I first watched the earlier series's episode "Objective Moon" (which combined "Destination Moon" and "Explorers on the Moon" into one episode) on video a few years before I started reading the books. It did surprise me when I saw how much the TV adaptations had altered the stories.
