This wonderful eight-part documentary series examines our favourite childhood toys, including Star Trek, Transformers, LEGO, Hello Kitty, Star Wars, Barbie, He-Man and G.I. Joe.
More than just a shameless nostalgia grab, this series (narrated by Donald Ian Black) takes a indepth look at each toy franchise: how they started, their incredible highs (with a LOT of money being made), huge falls and their legacy. There's interviews with toy company staff from Mattel, Mego, Hasbro and LEGO to name a few and celebrities including Paris Hilton and Dolph Lundgdren.
The series uses plenty of archival footage - with some hilariously outdated toy ads, spin-off movies, TV shows and comic books - and they also show you the process of making the toys. For viewers interested in the technical side of toy-making and the marketing wheeling and dealing needed to bring the toys into stores, it's fascinating.
The tone is kept light and doesn't get too geeky, so it can be enjoyed by casual viewers looking for a nostalgia fix.
Well worth watching for anyone who played with these toys growing up.
