Sony DSC HX400v vs. iPhone XS
Hello,A few years ago I had a Sony CyberShot DSC-HX200V. I was damaged beyond repair and I've never got around to replacing it. I can't find it new anywhere so I figured I'd go for the HX400V as it seems to be more or less the same and is newer.
However, I'm also wanting to upgrade my iPhone. I'm still on the 4 and I'd like to get an XS.
I'm not interested in other brands. I like these two for ease of use.
Can anyone tell how the two compare for photographs? My intention is fun and a casual hobby.
I'm going for the XS because it has the best camera of the iPhones but if I buy the Sony I wouldn't use a phone camera that much so I'd get one of the older phones.
I really don't understand the photography jargon of iPhone so can someone give me an idiot's guide. data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
Cheers Get the iPhone...... There you go, easy
Ice I appreciate your ability to get straight to the point but that doesn't help. Ok... The newest iPhone had much better results in all situations compared to the hx400 imo.All you miss is the reach. And if you do get the phone you will what's have a camera on you!!
Ice It's quite a difficult question to answer and really comes down to what range you're taking photos at, the iPhone image quality will be better at close range but as it can't zoom far the Sony will do better.
Although the Sony looks like it should have a bigger sensor, it has a similarly small one to the iPhone at just 1/2.3in which is in practice is one of the smallest sensors there is and the same one used in most high end mobile phones and superzoom cameras like the HX400.However the mobile phone manufacturers are able to use the phone's high performance hardware to heavily process the output from the sensor to produce incredibly good shots from such a small sensor.I have a similar Galaxy Note 8 and although I have many other cameras, I use my phone a lot for photos and I'm always amazed at how good the photos are. It's not just the image quality but the speed and convenience as well as I can bring up the camera app near instantly then take a photo straight after which after a couple more taps I can straight away share with friends.
A couple of years ago I purchased a phone that had a poor camera and I was surprised how much I missed the camera, I spent a while trying other solutions but ultimately realised the solution was to get a phone with a better camera.
The Sony on the other hand while it has a similarly sized sensor won't produce photos that look as good but its big advantage is that huge zoom lens which will allow you to zoom in far further than the iPhone. If you're taking a lot of photos at range then the Sony is going to suit you better.
I try to give balanced information but as you can probably tell if I was given the choice between a weaker phone and a better camera or just a better phone with a great camera I'd probably go for the latter. I had tried google for an answer but the results were not great. Your post is very much what I was looking for and answers my question.
Cheers. I'm pleased you found the information useful but I'd definitely see what others think as that's just my personal opinion.I think this type of question is a good one for forums as particularly with technology the best choice cam change quite quickly and very much so in this case as there's been a real focus on phone cameras over the last two to three years which has seen impressive improvements.
