Nikon D3400 fault

Hi all,

completely new to DSLR photography so managed to buy a Nikon D3400 before Xmas off gumtree. All was good but noticed that the zoom button was dodgy in that it seemed to get stuck and meant the other buttons around it wouldn't work until it became unstuck !

Well now it seems the button is fully stuck as none of the buttons (info, menu, zoom out etc.) seem to work nor can I get off the menu screen. The camera still takes pictures and Liveview works when switching to it as does the scroll dial, but can't get anything else working. The zoom button has no give in it when I press it compared to the other buttons.

Is this a fixable fault? Is it something I can do myself or need to take it in?

Thanks and looking forward to learning how to use my DSLR !!!

I wouldn't have a clue how to do it myself but it should be fixable. As to what it would cost to have it fixed I've no idea. Touch wood I've never had to have a repair done outside of warranty, but I know a number of people have used Lehmans for repairs and have been happy with their service, albeit a bit slow. Apparently Jessops do repairs too.

Cheers - yeah I’m going to take it into town (York) at the weekend and see if one of the camera stores can do anything. I’m the meantime I can be reading up on all the terminology and do’s/don’t of DSLRs data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

......If you've not splashed this camera....
Why don't you try to return it to the vendor? This "fault" may be why it was sold-on ( having been not-used perhaps ). Of course of it's someone selling their departed partner's beloved camera you might prefer to take the hit, if it was quite cheap.

You may discover the "repair charge" just to look at it will be rather high = not worth it, unless the body is particularly valuable. You could use the lens on another Nikon - so a Body-Only purchase will be lower. However, often the "kit lens" is a bargain and being new should give you years of service.
FWIW this model is no longer available from J.Lewis. . . . however, Argos show the basic D3400 with 18-55 kit lens @£354, or with the "better" VR-lens @ £374.
(( If it's an old model, then paying a little more may be worthwhile.))
Unless you are familiar with camera-repair don't touch it! However, if the "repair Cost" is likely to be high, then maybe it's worth a poke about, but you'll need excellent eyesight and small screwdrivers ( in a word DON'T ).
You could try a local camera club - they may know of this "fault" - or offer advice having witnessed it, that should be free.

Good Luck.

Thanks....well i dropped it into Jessops yesterday for them to look at repairing it. will hopefully hear back over the next few days around the cost of repair (if possible).

IMHO you should have gone to a repairer.( Let us know what J said... )
Any other routeintroduces additional cost, delay and (maybe) confusion.
Doesn't Nikon do repairs any longer? - they were in Richmond, Surrey.

( But your first call should be the Vendor, as suggested previously... )

Thanks, but the vendor was an individual on Gumtree, so no shop to take it back to !

Let's see what happens...so far Jessops are late in getting back to me with the repair cost

Nikon still do repairs, but I don’t expect Jessop do. Lehmann and Johnstone also fix them.

Jessops do, they send it off to a repair centre. They've already sent mine off to a repair centre, just waiting for the quote on repair, if indeed its repairable.

I’m talking about companies that DO repairs, not outfits that post them to places that DO repairs.
