anyone want to help a dude out?

Looks like the HDD is on it's way out (dying). If you can hook the drive up directly to the computer it may rule out the caddy.

But before that, try this: CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World

See if that detects anything abnormal.

thanks....been running some wd diagnostics stuff....quick passes are ok...fast diagnostics goes a couples of mins then brings up and error....now running an extended test

come to think of it ..this all happened after deleting about 250 gb of movie files

..tried to repair using windows tools.....gets to about 34 files then seems to hang....drive has already been wiped by a new format. ?

defrag seems to be over in seconds.

the wd tool to do quick and full erase seem to work

wd extended test is now saying 3000 hours to complete!

reckon this is proper shagged

still trying to sort it out!!

not convinced the drive is totally knackered!?
would deleting a largeish amount of files.... 250 gb....upset the drive ?

cokker Publish time 2-12-2019 03:36:26

No it wouldn't, when deleting a file on a hard disk the only thing that happens is the OS will see that part of the drive as writable again, the file is still there but only until another file is written in its place.

just let it run all night repairing bad sectors etc and re-formatted using windows tools....still no joy

tried exFat instead of the default NTFS....still didn't seem to cure it...saying 6 hours to transfer 250 mb file!

now wont format if I turn it back to NTFS?

now getting a strong urge to throw it against a wall many many many times

SOLUTION After a lot of pocking on why my 3 TB WD drive was so unbearably slow I too searched the internet and was surprised to find nothing. So I did several things and first took my drive to my old PC and it worked fine, so I knew it was not a drive problem. The quick fix for me was to turn off windows defender. Or any file check security software you might be running. In the bottom left Search for Win 10 type “Virus & Threat protection”. Once open select it and then select “Real Time Protection”. Select so it shows Off.
I did this during a slow download that was running from 100-400KB/s and after I applied the change and windows signaled the risk alert the speed jumped to 34MB/s. Much better Hope this helps. I am sure others will immediately grab this and post it as theirs on you tube. Good Luck
PS I am sure there are other ways to change the drive/file security profile but just remember to re-enable it when you’re done.

Before you throw it against a wall use diskpart from cmd line to see if you can clean and set the drive up in a fresh state. But please follow the steps carefully and make sure you identify and select the external drive correctly.

1. W7 Type command in search bar

2. Click on Command Promt - command window opens

3. Type    diskpart    Diskpart prompt appears

4. Type    list disk   press enter, list of disk's appear, disk 0 is your OS disk (probably C    drive) do not touch this. if you only have a single drive and your external then the externaldrive should be disk 1, make sure it is the external drive

5. Type    select disk 1   press enter, Disk 1 is now selected, there will be an asterisk * in left hand column noting the drive you are working on

6. Type    clean    press enter, before you press enter make sure you have selected your      external drive

7. Type   list disk   make sure it's still your external drive that has the asterisk in left hand column

8. Type   create primary partition size=2000   note you could create as many partitions as youwant here by changing 2000 Mb (2GB) to say 500 MB or 1000 (1GB) etc.

9.Type Select partition 1   press enter

10. Type   format FS=NTFS label=Data quick    press enter

11. Type   assign letter=E   press enter, can be any letter except you OS (C) drive

Let us know if the drive responds to Diskpart commands okay or if you need help with doing any of the above.
