WD ext hard drive now extremely slow ??
hi all,got a 2 tb western digital external hard drive which ive had for a while now with all movie files on...has been fine until the other day when I went to transfer a 6gb movie rip and it said a time of an hour or 2!...usually takes a minute or 2
the drive was taking forever to be read by win 7 too so tried to repair it in tools....bit the bullet and ended up trying to format it....windows couldn't format it so I ended up using the western digital format tool and finally got it formatted....now got an empty hard drive and windows now sees it quicker but the transfer time is still the same slow speed?
its going to take a month at this rate to transfer my movies back on can anyone help or give advice on whatcan do or is the hard drive on the way out?
cheers in advance First of all try a different USB cable..
If no difference,
1. Do a windows search for 'Administrative tools'
2. Run services shortcut
Once the services program loads find the services called Background intelligent transfer service and stop it
also right click on the same service and click properties then change the start value to manual or disabled.
If no difference,
1. Open "My Computer" or "Computer" from your (Start) Menu or Button.
2. Right-click the external Hard disk drive from the list and select "properties"
7. Click the "Hardware" tab.
8. Highlight the drive your having problems with from the drive list and click on "Properties".
9. Click on the “Policies” tab.
10. You will see two radio buttons - "Optimize for quick removal" and "optimize for performance".
11. If not selected, select "Optimize for performance" and click on "OK". If running Vista or Windows 7 also check "enable write caching on the disk".
12. Click on "OK" and exit. thanks...i'll have give these a try...haven't got a spare cable at the mo Sounds like a possible driver issue ? selected optimize for performance....cant find any 'enable write caching on the disk' anywhere....tried through device manager?
tried to transfer a 4 gb movi rip...started saying 60 seconds to complete...then after a few seconds changed to 2 1/2 hours!?
cheers You can try but It's the same destination as through device manager. I'm sorry I can't help any further as I don't have an external HD with me at the moment to compare with.
Different USB ports still have the same problem, yeah? Try running HDtune and see what it tells us.. HD Tune website ..well not the cable...changed it and still the same problem
..ran hd tune and got this
tried to run the error check thing...but after waiting 3 hours I still hardly checked anything?...scanning speed stated out at 24 mb/sec and ended p 0.8 mb/sec ?? anyone any ideas?
cant afford a new one at the mo so really hoping this is fixable?
cheers anybody?
cheers
