Of course they're not solely to blame, quite a few major game developers didn't make the effort to support multiple platforms and encourage competition between them. Had we not a near-monopoly there'd be much bigger incentives to develop interoperability.
Unfortunately Microsoft's effort, Games for Windows, wasn't successful, Some major server issues on release of several games gave it a bad reputation. Although I always found it to be an excellent service.
Fast startup (hybrid shutdown/hibernate) has been standard since Windows 8, but the Restart option was always a full shutdown/startup. Are you sure that's changed recently? Run the htpc as a Virtual Machine I am sure some people have built them and depending on the hyoervisor allows direct access to the GPU. Windows 10 can save the state of applications now and reload them to that point but it still does a shutdown and startup in those case. Positive mate. IL try to dig up a thread I found on MS site. But todays been a crazy day and I’m beat already.
I started to notice when clickingon windows >restart issues.windows I had opened before poped back up. According to MS this is now normal behaviour.
Open up task manager. Do a click windows and then restart. Task manager will pop back up.
I started to get issues on some steam games.
Sometimes steam game would try to open and then go back to steam and you will see a game running message next to it.
Try to launch the game and it will say game already running....
This is an age old issue and mainly effects my Lego games on steam more then anything else.
Anyway the proper way to fix this is open task manager . Find and kill the process.
Another way use to be just do a restart.
9/10 times a restart would not work in killingthe game process for me.
Then I’d notice if I left task manager and at times some other software running on a restart these would pop up again
(Across 3 machines).
So going from a restart will fix almost any issue to a restarts no longer a proper restart...
My over all media solution is way over engineered. So something would always bug out or crash. Could be a Wii emulator orgame. Or the Xbox controller won’t work on steam or bigbox menu but fine in a game data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 and then it will start to work again.
This overlay or that over lay conflict.
Having to manually go into some game launch executables to change dpi settings because in game res would be all over the place!
I’m just at that point in life when I want stuff to just work....
I found out if I did a proper restart /shut down eithervia scripts or that fn ctrl and f4
Anything other then clicking on windows and shut down/restart would fix it.
I then went to the other extreme.
Bought a w8 key for a few quid of eBay.
Installed windows 8 and I had 99% stability for a month!!!
On boot up within 2 secs bigbox will kick in.
From there I could either launch a steam/Origin/uplay etc game or some retro rom or Wii game.
Or I could click on kodi and have all my vids play via powerdvd18 doing audio pass through... Heaven!!!
When it worked. The feeling was sublime. Walking in saying “Alexa Play Game”
Alexa turning on my htpc tv and amp.
By the time Iv picked up my Xbox one controller and sat down a stunning colourful screens up with options for me to dive in to. If I don’t fancy gaming. IL just pick up the harmony remote or do it via the app and stick some movie on.
For the family they have their apple4k tv that’s nice and easy to use.
For me. Watching a movie via my htpc was like. Yep I builtthat. That’s my baby! This worked great in both windows 8and 10. When it worked that is...
However windows 8 has no MS store. So no forza games or the other stuff I’d spent money on buying (dx12 stuff)
Hence back to windows 10.
Add to the mix where for some people who are trying to rip and watch their full fat 4K blue rays on their htpc and are running into issues with making sure the motherboard and cpu chip sets have to match... I think I miss the days where my issues where finding the right drivers data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 Got the display stuff working perfect for me btw.
PC fires up and only marantz and second 55” is active.
If I want the other screens i need to manually click a few buttons on the monitors.. no bigee
Now I just need to test my FLIRC and other usb/cat6 extenders/wol commandsi have in place for my htpc on the PC to make sure it will work! Is that using display changer II then? No, did not get a chance. It was mainly plugging in and trying the different ports on my Gpu, when you have 4 displays connected for some reason it gives you the option to duplicate 2 of them and extend the other two..... yep....
Oh and you can’t exactly pick which ones randomly.
For example it will be duplicate 2 and 4 or 2 and 1 and not the ones you want.
So once I plugged in or replugged and tried the differ ports to get the combo and order to what Microsoft will allow me to duplicate and extend (3 display port and 1 hdmi), I got my ability to duplicate two displays and keep the others at a resolutions (1080p x2, 4K, 1440p) and placement I wanted. I think I follow you though I also have four displays (5 if you count the post split one) attached to my 980Ti in the same way and it allows me to do any mixture I want.I normally do it through the Nvidia control panel though.
