Microsoft sorted out most of the stability issues in Windows with Vista. The only computers I've had since then that were 'forever crashing' have had demonstrably faulty hardware. I suspect that was the problem with your Windows 7 machine.
While you can download Windows 10, it's intended to be a trial. Not a basic version you can use forever. The interface is also not 'completely different'. All the core functionality is identical (application windows, cursor etc.) with just a few tweaks in design and arrangement.
Windows comes with a word processor as it always has (Wordpad) but not spreadsheet and presentation software. There are free and cheap packages available though.
