LCD with HDMI 2.1?

I know some of the new LG LCD's have HDMI 2.1 but what other brands also have it on their sets?

I'm looking for a TV that is future proof enough to make most of the new consoles that are coming out next year.

I don't want to go down the OLED route as having to babysit the TV would drive me insane.

Currently LG's SM9000 and SM9500 are the only ones with HDMI 2.1 ports.

However LG told FlatpanelsHD that the Alpha 7 Gen 2 chipset in the SM9xxx TV's does not support HDMI 2.1 4K 120hz HDR only SDR at that resolution and refresh rate.

Here you can see more confusion on Rtings who were told it would be added in a future firmware update.

There is some uncertainty if that is really true and the LG rep was confused about something else like say the internal video apps running 120fps HDR, there are no HDMI 2.1 devices to test with.

Worst case scenario if it's true means with PS5 the video output at 4K native res of panel will be either
* 60hz with VRR range of 40-60fps covering SDR/HDR.
* 120Hz with VRR range of 40-120fps covering SDR only.

I hope LG can clear this situation up.

Edit: Update read this.

There's also the SM9800 isn't there? So these sets might not even have full HDMI 2.1?

Do you know of any upcoming LCD'S that will have the full beans?

I'm not sure whats inside the SM9800 but a quick look on line says its the same Alpha 7 Gen 2.

Only the C9/E9 OLED have the Alpha 9 Gen 2 which is certain about its 4K 120Hz HDR output support.

Sorry don't know about any other LED TV's, there probably will be some offerings next year so perhaps it is better to wait for those to launch and LG clear the air about the A7G2 chipset.

Cheers for that, I can't believe no other LED's have it on board tbh. Yes think I will wait then as I want to make the most of these new consoles next year.

What are you specifically looking for with 2.1 hdmi?

wass1985 Publish time 1-12-2019 22:11:21

The ability to get the most out of the PS5 when it's released next year.

Any TV you can buy in the next 10 years is likely to be superseded by a TV the year after that can display more of the HDR range so that's not really something you can do.

Are there any technologies in HDMI 2.1 that are likely to fix anything that annoys you or have a particularly big impact on you?

wass1985 Publish time 1-12-2019 22:11:22

Well there likely won't be any more consoles for the next decade after the PS5 so it's imperative my new set can utilise the consoles full potential. So yes it's a necessity that my next TV has HDMI 2.1.

It seems to say HDMI 2.1 will handle 4K HDR at 120Hz.

The newly ratified HDMI 2.1 standard, though, can carry a massive 48Gbps of data. That’s easily enough to handle 4K at 120Hz in HDR – either at a constant or (if the PS5 supports it) variable refresh rate. And HDMI 2.0 ports cannot be upgraded by software to make them magically support such high data rates.
