It is unwise to buy a new TV or receiver without HDMI 2.1. For TVs the C9 took AVF's Best Overall Award for a reason. Babysitting it wont drive you insane. HDMI 2.1 receivers, GPUs, consoles, dont yet exist but ought to appear in a year or two.

Trust me it would, whenever I'm not in the house I would be paranoid about screen burn when the Mrs and kids are watching it. I want to be able to enjoy what's on the set not have to think about nannying it.

Still everybody none the wiser regarding HDMI 2.1 on the LG Nano?

Found this from march 2019 very revealing HDMI 2.1 Features In 2019 Samsung, LG TVs Clarified | HD Guru
It seems at the time of the article LG says that none of the 8600 series will not support vrr over hdmi but over usb only (via software update, for streaming probably), only 9000 series will support vrr at what refresh rate res' it's a guess.No support for 8600 series such as eARC. Dynamic HDR Metadata is supported on all nano cell tv's over hdmi. Allm is supported over hdmi on all.

Cheers so it looks like the SM9800 has the full features of HDMI 2.1, anybody on here have that set?

Ibis Publish time 1-12-2019 22:11:26

The sm9000 seems to have as well.

The worry is the complaints about the black levels and such. I've got a 2012 Sony KDL-46HX53, surely a modern TV despite it's flaws will have a much better picture? I know the Sony at the time of release was one of the best pics out there.

LG confirm the 4K 120hz HDR limitation of the Alpha 7 Gen2 chipset, so if you have any LG LED TV with that then maximum output is for HDR 4K 60hz and for SDR 4K 120hz over HDMI 2.1

The A7G2 is used on the SM9000, SM9500, SM9800 and B9 OLEDmodels, what 2.1 features that gets you are;

* HDMI VRR 40-120hz range.

* eARC with HD audio though LG do not yet support PCM 5.1/7.1 over eARC making it a sub optimal choice for game consoles as PCM is the lowest latency format to avoid audio lag, there is rumor talk LG will add PCM next year.

* Dynamic HDR which despite the name is not a new HDR format but a standard for HDR metadata transfer apparently.

* Automatic Low Latency mode which LG brands as automatic game response, this actually does not auto switch to game mode but applies a temporary game mode to the existing picture preset disabling some of its video processing features. Currently only Xbox One consoles and PC AMD/Nvidia GPU drivers support this.

* Quick media switching allows a seamless switch from 60Hz or 50hz to 24Hz without the usual blank screen interval (requires support from HDMI device).

* QFT (quick frame transport) designed to lower input lag display latency, may or may not need support from HDMI device it is unclear.

IPS based panels like LG's do not have best black levels but they are okay in a well lit room.

Will the new consoles do 4K @ 120Hz? If so I just don't know what to do now.

next010 Publish time 1-12-2019 22:11:30

Yes they will technically be capable of it with HDMI 2.1 ports.

Whether they make full use of it is another matter.

For example if a game offers a better than 60fps mode with a frame rate of up to 120fps you need a 120hz output to get that, the LG LED TV's support 4K 120hz SDR output and 1440p 120hz HDR output.

You will lose HDR support at 4K 120Hz as they only support 4K 60hz HDR. Running at 1440p 120Hz will restore HDR but make picture softer as it is not the native 4K panel resolution.

I suggest waiting for next years TV's which should hopefully have HDMI 2.1 support without LG's current LED TV limitation.

If you feel you cannot wait, well it's probably likely not many games will have 120fps modes and if you can live without the HDR for those select titles the current SM9xxx models should be fine.
