Huawei P30/ P30 Pro
P30 Pro ReviewThe camera set up looks interesting with the 125mm periscope and 20MP ultra-wide angle camera (16mm) with autofocus. Thats one up on the S10 (the S10 has 12mm equivalent, but lacking autofocus).
Oh look, P30 Pro tops DxOMarks..(the first part of the review reads more like a marketing fluff than an actual review, but hey that's a sign of the times i guess). I'm a big fan of Huawei products so they certainly look good to me.
I've got a P20 at the moment and I was keeping an eye on the release to see if the P30 was going to add what I'm missing. Its good for me that the 3.5mm jack has been added back in, but there is still no wireless charging so I'm not sure if there are enough reasons for me to upgrade. The P30 Pro does look very good and spec wise ticks most of my boxes, but I need to try it in my hands as I'm worried it might be too big. P30 Pro doesn't have the headphone jack.
So much for Chinese phones offering more for less.
Matches the S10but at same price so unless you need the low light camera I'd still go Samsung, higher res, HDR screen, lighter, headphone socket.
I'm currently loving my S10Ceramic 512GB 512GB microSD data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 But I'm sure I'd be be happy with this phone but not for same price as the Samsung. The 3.5mm jack is something nice to have, but I wouldn't choose it over wireless charging. Unfortunately I don't think there is a decent top end phone that has both, it seems to be a common trend to remove the headphone socket these days. The P30 Pro doesn't even come with a headphone adapter in the box either which seems a bit silly.
I had Samsung before moving to Huawei and I wouldn't go back to them. I don't like their version of Android and I've always had issues or faults with their devices.
I do like the P30 and the P30 Pro, but at first glance I don't think there's enough extra on either of them to justify replacing my P20. I don't need to change right now so I can wait until later in the year. Err, yes the S10/S10has both plus I can even charge my Watch from the phone (reverse charging).
Though over a year old now my LG V30also has headphone out & wireless charging. Any thoughts on the P30 vs S10e? Looking at the specs more closely, the P30 range share the same process as the P20 range - no major issue if you are new to the P30, but it doesn't offer an incentive to upgrade. Maybe it should be called the P25...
The early reviews, whilst on the whole most are positive, particularly around the periscope lens, others give lip service to some horrendous low light photos.
The video capabilities however, do look very promising. Having a 125mm lens with a 5 x optical zoom...
You need to take the video with a pinch of salt though - clearly not SOOC. Shot on a gimbal and edited, but it highlights what could be achieved on the P30 Pro.
Question; Is it true that Huawei lock down their OS so much it prevents even launchers working correctly? I've used Nova on top of Samsung for years, it would be another minus point if it didn't work. As I said in that same post I won't touch Samsung again so have already discounted the S10 models. I didn't know about the LG though so I may look into that one, thanks for mentioning it. I don't know anyone who's owned LG phone so don't have any real world experience with the brand which is why I've not paid them much attention.
As kBm has said this seems more like a P25 than a P30, there definitely isn't the step up between the two models that I thought (and hoped) there would be.
@kBm I've had no issues using nova launcher on mine although I've stopped using it in recent weeks as I like the Huawei system well enough. Modern Samsungs bare no comparison to old Samsungs. UI is great now and hardware has been superb for a while.
Your loss...choice.
I get my phone for free. If I had to use my own cash it would still be my LG V30 which can currently get for under £400. My last Samsung was the S7 Edge so not what I'd call an old model. I had 3 replacements in 2 years from Samsung because they suffered total system failures of various sorts. Sad really as otherwise it was a great handset. I know that I suffered an abnormal number of failures, but the whole faff every time has completely put me off them as a brand for now.
