Super Mario World
HiI'm going to make a potentially blasphemous statement here and say that I don't really like SMW all that much.
I've been gaming since the 80s and always loved platformers starting with Pitfall on the Atari 2600 and Manic Miner on the Spectrum.I was desperate for a 16 bit console when they came out and in particular the Snes looked to have a collection of crazily good games, yet it was SMW that I was most desperate to play.I recall 'Ace' magazine publishing an article entitled 'Super Mario World: An analysis of perfect gameplay' around 1991ish which I must have read 100 times.
Anyhow, I was a late adopter and bought my Snes in 1995, to this day it is still my favourite console of all time and Super Mario Kart is my favourite game, but.......for some reason I never got on with SMW.I'm giving it another go now but am finding all the same frustrations coming back again.
I don't know what it is, maybe I'm just not that good at it, but I just find it an exercise in frustration. If I ever try to run, I just end up running into something that kills me, levels that are great seem to be followed by ones that I just find too hard and I die over and over again.
Are there any tips or strategies on how to be a better player on SMW?I feel I must be missing something.Or maybe I'm just useless at gaming! Find the level near the bridge where you can farm 1-ups is my biggest tip. I played this with a friend when it was released and so never completed it myself. Have re started it on the Wii and Wii U and woudl really like to complete it on my own but again I dont think I am as good as I used to be. But having the access to the 1-ups is helpful. What console are you playing it on - original SNES? I find the controller can make a difference. I find the GC controller suits me best, I'm actually playing with a Wii Pro Controller, after 3 months of utter frustration trying to get hold of a Nes Classic last year I bought a Wii loaded with retro games.I'm in the same situation this year with the Snes Classic, if I ever manage to get hold of one of these I'll be playing with the proper controller again (my original Snes is still in the loft TBH!). If you're on Amazon prime, they're in stock on 'Amazon Prime Now' website (availability depends on location) Cheers.....all gone now! Me and the wife played SMW via an emulator on my Xbox and we were rubbish. Once I got the Snes mini classic I was instantly better using the original snes controller. My wife was . . . . still rubbish haha. I think it's easily the best 2D platformer to date.
In my opinion it's never been bested in 27 years and it never will be. I found - every time I replayed it - that the difficulty spike was unforgiving for me personally. I think everyone experiences it differently though.
I was a Sonic kid though, so never understood why I could run left, as well as right...! I loved it back in the day and gleefully completed all 96 exits.
Had it on the Wii (VC) a few years ago and it wasn’t the same. I found the controls a bit off so didn’t really persevere with it.
Now have it on the 3DS, again via via VC, and on the SNES, and it turns out I’m just not as good at it as I used to be. It’s stood the test of time incredibly well, though – much more so than Mario 64.
