In the case Aysha Kingcase..
'A High Court judge approved the move to take Ashya to Prague for proton therapy, which the PTC said is more effective than the radiotherapy Ashya was being offered on the NHS.
It limits the collateral damage of radiation to other vital organs, such as the heart and liver in Ashya's case. This would lead to less severe long-term side-effects including heart and breathing problems.'
Brain tumour boy Ashya King is free of cancer after proton therapy, parents say
Note that this judgement was after the public outcry. As you say, he is not fully in the clear but clearly not a seriously damaged, which was the most likely outcome if the Proton Therapy had not been used. Please don't think I am rubbishing doctors. What I am totally against, is one set of doctors advice being enforced by the heavy hand of the law.
As tapz says....
How can that be right?

The answer is in this post (you likely won't agree with it, but do give it a read) -

Some cases will look slam dunk "Parents were right" and in others it won't be. And in some cases there will be no viable treatment and people will have to learn to accept that until science advances. Medical Science has advanced a lot in the last 200 years, but it still has a long way to go in terms of finding treatments for various diseases. Cure is not a word I like to use all that much, as it's quite a rare thing to achieve.

A cruel and ignorant campaign | MelaniePhillips.com
This piece from Melanie Phillips puts the whole thing in perspective along with the tapzilla link.
I think the poor kid should have been allowed to slip away months ago without all the publicity and anguish that has been caused to his parents. I think they will regret in time that they allowed the circus to encompass their child's last weeks.

Is this a case of social media gone crazy and media limelight fuelling ( including parents ) that and fanning the flames . I don't mean to sound heartless as a parent would grasp at any hope to save their child , but to drag this on for so so long may of well been the cruelist of acts for poor lil Charlie. How much limited resources were poured into this one child's case through the courts at the cost of other children ?

Once Charlie received his diagnosis and had the seizures that left him to all intents and purposes brain dead in January ( think it was then) , his little life was over data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

A perfect storm of grossly overexcitable bandwagon jumpers on Facebook, US religious groups latching onto it to push their agenda, and tabloid spotlighting with the aid of an aggressive PR agency
