Shia and Sunni. I wonder how long they have been at loggerheads?

Seems forever - all the way back to the Prophet I should imagine.

They both see each other as infidels.

An ongoing crusade then.

Yet again religion dividing and not uniting, continuing violence committed against humanity in the name of God. The potential for war has always been brewing, but now many media websites are a little alarmed how rapidly things are reaching boiling point.

But this is 'situation normal' for the Middle East.

raduv1 Publish time 26-11-2019 02:41:07

I'm sorry, but haven't Saudi and Qatar both not admitted supporting / funding Daesh ?

Cliff Publish time 26-11-2019 02:41:08

The only problem in regards to a full on war with the west would be if all middle East countries, religious factions etc etc etc Unitedunder one banner. If that would ever look close to a possibility the west goes in to destabilise the region once again to show the true infidels and give the middle east a real villain once again.

At this point no country in the west wants a truly stable middle East, just a middle East we can use to our advantage.

Stable but not to much.

Skull n Bones Publish time 26-11-2019 02:41:09

In a way yes! Its complicated... To begin with there was support for Daesh. Then things got out of hand and Daesh became a threat to the Saudis. Then the Saudis joined the west to help defeat Daesh. Then Qatar was left on its own and and the Saudis accused Qatar of supporting Daesh and cut off links with that country. Now Qatar has loose links with Iran....

To make things even more complicated, funding has come from wealthy individuals and not necessarily governments.

Destabilising the Middle East is the last thing you would want to do, if your intention was to maximise the oil supply. The US is also now pretty self sufficient, so the old "it's all about the oil" trope is more inaccurate than ever.

Ruperts slippers Publish time 26-11-2019 02:41:11

That oil trope has always been a distraction, tho a profitable one for some, away from the destruction, control and stability of the ME
