Quote Gathered together by Professor Charles Xavier to protect a world that fears and hates them, the X-Men had fought many battles, been on adventures that spanned galaxies, grappled enemies of limitless might, but none of this could prepare them for the most shocking struggle they would ever face. One of their own members, Jean Grey, has gained power beyond all comprehension, and that power has corrupted her absolutely! Now they must decide if the life of the woman they cherish is worth the existence of the entire universe! Collects X-Men #129-137. If thats all the storys thats in the fortnightly its well worth the £9.99 thats like 8 issues and double issue. Even the Masterworks that usaly contain 10 issues are now over £30.

129 is more or less the start of Jeans corruption although the power does not corrupt her I would say its Masterminds meddling but 129 is that start of the Hellfire Club.

If I don't get back on this thread after the books out here's what happens after the Dark Phoenix Saga SPOILERlater.

Theres also a tale behind the Sage in real life how things came about which is intresting.its nor realy Jean its the Phoenix entity that took her over she is in a cocoon where she is discovered

Ive subscribed to this. Thought id treat myself and it will make a nice little collection. I havent read any marvel comics for abour 25 years!!

metropolis Publish time 25-11-2019 04:11:40

so,as a novice to the comic book world is this worth collecting or are there better ways to to broaden my comic horizons ?

Theydon Bois Publish time 25-11-2019 04:11:41

I think so - Spiderman is a solid start, the X-Men is supposed to be an influence on the X-Men films (not read it myself) Iron Man gets ok reviews I think, and Civil War is supurb.

A nice spread across the Marvel range, and picking up the first two will set you back £12, which is a bargin data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

If you mean the Dark Phoenix saga, then yes, it was implied in X-Men: The Last Stand, but the story bears absolutely no resemblance whatsoever, both in the sense of where Jean Grey's "Phoenix" powers came from and her state of mind. I'd recommend anyone to read the book, as it's without a doubt one of the greatest X-Men stories ever told... data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Regarding these books, I'm not convinced yet - like others have said, the GNs of Planet Hulk and World War Hulk are pretty huge, and I'm not convinced they won't break them down into several smaller ones. Besides which, I already have a lot of them, so not sure about buying them again, even if they are hardback!

Theydon Bois Publish time 25-11-2019 04:11:43

Oh, I wont be buying versions I already have, and things like Thor will be given a miss. I know for a fact that I will not buy them all, and I wont buy ones I already have either - but I reserve the right to retract that statement naturally data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

And although I mentioned about the 'please dont split books' WWH is marked as 55 in the back of the Spiderman book, so I hope I am making 5 from 2 2, as its not written as Vol 55 and 56 for example....

The next one must be a large one as well at 200 pages, and WWH is apparently 276 - we will just have to wait and see, and moan or cheer accordingly....

Futher to the above comments on that I too read that on the back of a copy I managed to pick up today at Smiths.

The only influance it had on the film was Jean was corupted and became very powerful, in the film even there very ristrained on the comic she was almost God like. How she got her powers were totaly different, last thing on her mind would be to harm Scott. Although somthing in the film between her and a charater was realy Scott in the book.

The first X-men cartoon came quie near with the Saga but still was different.
