buying a Diesel - but dont drive many miles.
Hi,I am looking at buying a Mazda 6 2.2 Sport which is a Diesel but I dont do huge mileage and am worried about the DPF not getting cleaned.
At the moment I have a 25-30 minute commute (one way)each day which is mostly 40 speed limit (some 50 as well) of 11 miles and then the same home again.I dont go on the motorway regulary so am I going to have issues with a diesel? If I still get one how often and much extra driving do I need to do to keep it running OK ?
I am mostly getting this car because I like it (car tax is lower also) so emmissions/ fuel ecom etc are secondary factors.
cheers Id personally go petrol for this low mileage but I like you also like the Mazda 6. Why not go for the 2 litre petrol engine? Tax may be higher and fuel economy not as good for a petrol. You may get away with regenerating the DPF on your commute. In the 50 zone if you run the car in 3rd or 4th gear so the engine is revving higher for a few miles it may be OK. If not then its a motorway job I have an Insignia diesel and my daily trip is only 4 miles each way. It can be 2 months before I get it on a motorway and I have never had an issue with the DPF in over two years of ownership. I have seen somepeople on youtube (yeah I know) activating a regenerating the DPF when they need it, so maybe thats a possible solution if its not getting done when I drive. Also with Diesel , I was under the impression they tend to do better on higher milege than petrol cars, I am seeing one with 94K on it soon and there is another (a long long way from me) with 80K on, I may visit if I can be bother to drive for a day,if all otherthings are the same how much does the mileage matter for diesels (its a 2012 car)
Thanks Id go on condition not mileage these days. 80k on a 12 plate has probably been a reps car and been up and down the motorway all day. Probably actually be better than one the same age with 20k on that's only been to the shops and back Also two of my colleagues had Mazda 6's as their company cars before the ones they have now. They were never anything but reliable in all the time I can remember. Avoid the mazda diesel if doing short trips. Just google oil level rising, oil contamination. Unlikely nowadays. If anything it's more costly in the long run.
Turbo failure (though rare) could set you back a £1000. Not going to happen on a NA petrol.
