Apologies if this has been mentioned before but another way may be to transfer the debt and car to your name, take ownership of the car with finance company on board. Give the seller £200 and just pay off the £6.8k once you get the car home?
As has been mentioned before I wouldn't go through anyway but just thinking of ways to minimise risk for op as he seems to be intent on purchasing this car

Is it possible this £6800 was a figure the seller spewed to keep from lowball offers. I.e the dealer actually has offered him £6000? so its nearer a grand worth of saving?
