We did it with our last car, albeit there was no finance. Dealer agreed to buy it for 2k, and explicitly told us to try selling it privately in the weeks before we got our new car as they would only break even on the trade in. We sold it privately within a week for 2.7k, but I'd have accepted anything over the dealer price because why not.

There's nothing unusual about buying a car with finance still on. As others have said, take care and make the seller pay his 800 before you pay your part. Also do it somewhere neutral like a bank. Remember the seller is likely as nervous as you - if a 22 year old isn't when there's a chance he could be scammed, then question why.

@Shooter1, I'm not saying that this is a scam, but I don't like the look of it personally and cannot agree more with the 'plenty more fish in the sea' sentiment either - it's a car we're talking about, not a Faberge egg.

Another alarm bell that rings for me is the journey time to the seller. If you are buying a high value product, tell me honestly, would you be more likely to just walk away over issues if it was only a 10 minute drive away, or a 4 hour drive? I think this is yet another pressure on you to buy this car, even if you did have minor alarm bells ringing.

Anyway, it's now Monday, please update us all - did you buy the car yesterday or not?

This has scan written all over it, but even if it isn't there might be a problem with OP paying off the finance.

Don't know about Barclays but Kia finance refused to let me pay off the wife's car finance, even when using the same joint account used to pay the initial payments. It had to be done by her in person they said.

So I called back with a high-pitched voice on and all was fine. Utterly ridiculous.
