I think the thought line needs to be "where do I draw the line here"I think it's had it's day and even if you replaced this part, what do you decide to do in another 2 months time when you have another failure?

That's a Torx bolt (some known as a star drive) Probably a T45, T50 or T55 as they are the most common sizes found in socket sets.Probably worth grabbing a set like this to make sure your options are covered:

For undoing the bigger size bolts I would also consider getting a 1/2 inch to 3/8 converter/adaptor so you can use a 1/2 inch socket bar to undo a tight bolt.
