A quick question about High Performance Cars

My neighbours' son has a suped-up Beamer and when he launches off, the engine makes a banging crackling sound, it sounds like it's back firing. This is without affecting it's performance, the car doesn't judder or pause. I've noticed other suped-up cars where the engin makes the same noise as the car accelerates. Why is this?

This is probably down to modifications of the car”s software, known as a map, which can add crackles and pops or possibly he has had the resonator deleted from his exhaust.

I’ve had my resonator removed as it now sounds like it should from the factory in Wolfsburg, albeit on a VW not a BMW. It transforms the sound of a car.

Most modern cars are made to sound like that, especially on over run. M140i would pop and bang when in sport mode with a heavy foot. I30 N Performance is a good example of them making a car sound way louder then it needs to be.

If people can deliberately make their cars sound like that it should be banned. My neighbours son often goes out late at night and returns in the earlier hours of the morning and it sounds like a an exchange of gunfire outside and we've got double glazing. It's a nuisance and anti social.

It will not last much longer, they're going to start putting noise camera's up and drivers will be fined receive points.

Its fuel in the exhaust on overrun usually, even factory cars will do it (albeit much more subtly than after market remaps and the like).

I believe the noise cameras are more aimed at superbikes with aftermarket, superloud cans.

My Clubman S does it from the factory

No just bikes, cars will be targeted as well.

My Mercedes-AMG you would hate. Just starting it is enough and letting it idle is enough. It’s wonderful. It’s a symphony of mechanical engineering. And it is factory stock. Gets better with age in the sound department. New it sounded tinny and high, now it’s deep and with a rumble.

But yes race cams and fuel in the overrun, can cause some nice bangs and pops.

The issue isn't if the car pops on overrun - it's driving like a pillock in the middle of the night.
When I was a whippersnapper I used to push my scooter away from my friends' houses if it was very late before I kick started it and I'd coast onto my own drive with the engine off to avoid irritating the neighbours.
Perhaps politely mention to your neighbour that you're being woken by their son's driving, not his car.

Our Mini Cooper S pops on overrun if you're driving with enthusiasm.I wouldn't do it in my village though!
