Vancouver - Calgary

We're looking to spend a couple of weeks around Vancouver and Victoria Island before making our way to Calgary where out flight back is from.
Our daughter has just moved to Vancouver and is suggesting that accomodation needs to be booked well in advance.
I was hoping that during the few days we plan to travel and sight see on our way from Vancouver to Calgary we could just wing it and find BB's or motels as and when required.
Is this possible like in the US, or would others who are familiar with Canada not recommend this.

Any thoughts and suggestions  of places to see would be much appreciated.

You could wing it but between Vancouver and Calgary are some popular national parks and accommodation in those areas will fill up quickly so it will probably be best booking in advance to make sure you have somewhere to stay.
