So, random long weekend in Prague coming up. Had an IOU from a hotel so will be staying fairly central in Malá Strana.

First time in the city and its not a considered visit so was looking for suggestions, other than on hotels, on activities, places to eat etc for a couple? Given the flights are on Avios and hotel (B&B basis) is free out budget is flexible.

Oh yes, where you stay there, its gottabe gottabe Old Town or just over the river from it, in the castle area, where you are to be located. Good place.

The castle is great and no cliché about it. The hilly landscape in its environs are lovely. Be sure to walk up the Petra ( Petrin ? ) Tower on the hill, which is a sort of one third tall Eifel Tower inspired structure, but which equals it in height when the hill is factored in. Go up at the right time of the sun, so that your photos below and over to the Old Town are nice - I think from memory that was late afternoon. Btw, don;t try it if its windy or you'll soil your under armour.

Perhaps the best view of the rooftops of Old Town are from the council offices building which hosts the famous golden clock thingie on its side, off Old Town Sq. I guess they don't advertise this otherwise they'd be inundated, but if you get yourself inside and up in the old elevators as high as you can go, there is a viewing tower affording the most wonderful look down upon those red roofs of old Prague. I suspect various brochure photographs have been taken from this vantage point. No need to rave about the clock outside at ground level, as you're bound to come across it anyway !

Speaking of the clock, it is often utilised as a meeting point for the plethora of walking tours available. I'd recommend you have a good look at these. I think of particular interest would be a tour connected to Prague's troubled past and its attempt to become the country it is today and was briefly before the war. So I suggest a tour that bases itself on WWII experience, moving through the Soviet occupation and the dissident movement that eventually won through in the 1990s.

There are many specific things that will be fun to see and do, but perhaps the essence of Prague is simply the chilling, eating and drinking in the many worthy and often quirky places. There's also a lot that turns up spontaneously to enjoy and often for free - for example keep an eye on little churches dotted around, which often offer orchestral recitals for free in gorgeous, candle lit settings.

You've got to go for some absinthe, with the sugar and proper flaming preparation rituals of course. A fun bit of bullsh*t for your trip, you can't not do.
