Advise on DSLR upgrade?

Hi Guys,

I would really appreciate your help and advice on what I should do.

So a few years ago, I purchased a Canon 550D from Jessops and have the kit lens and a few zoom and 50mm len's, nothing amazing. Its main use at the time was for mainly attend press events and take pics and video for interviews etc. Now I rarely attend them and the camera was used mainly for travel and personal use and amatuer photgraphy.

Sadly it recently died and it needs a new board. This is where I have now become confused, originally I set myself a budget of around £300-400 and was thinking do I want a new cam or used? Do I need to stay Canon? I was originally looking at 600D and 650D from MPB since ebay would be too risky for an old camera but its priced around £200 which made me think is it not better to get a newer cam that will work well for me? Recently Argos had the 200D and 750D which were both tempting but I could not make up my mind if they were good cameras or not. 200D seemed the better one which I missed before the 750D which seems older.

To confuse me more I went into Jessops and they suggested the 550D was similar to my 550D just a few more pixels, AF was similar. They suggested moving to a 77D which seems not a bad price at hdewcameras and thebackpackergear. (not sure if they are legit or grey imports).

Ideally I would like a good camera I can use to travel, have control and value for a while. At one point I was considering the 700D as it seems to have the main features?

If you can recomend a new or old camera which would it be and any suggestions are certainly appreciated.

Unless you want to start spending a lot stick with Canon as you already have the lenses. I’m not up on Canon bodies though.

I've got a 750D which does a good enough job and decent pics up to around 1600 ISO but much better keeping below 800 ISO. I find the lack of a rear control wheel to adjust exposure compensation is a bit frustrating. But no different from what you are used to with your 550D. Only 15 point AF though. I find the metering more accurate than on my Canon 6D full frame camera. The Argos price of £430 inc a kit lens seems good. And if you don't want the kit lens you should be able to sell it on easy enough and reduce the overall price paid for the 750D.

The 77D is a higher model in the Canon range than the 700D or 800D. I'd recommend a 77D over an 700D/800D as it has an AF ON button, a rear control wheel, the sensor and the 45 point AF from the 80D (800D also has these two). If you can stretch to it an 80D would be the top of the list. Much better all round for controlability. All based on HDEW prices.

If you want a UK rather than a grey source (HDEW) I'd wait until black friday in November when there should be some good deals around especially for the 80D which has now been replaced by the 90D. But they would have to be very good deals to beat the current £609 for it at HDEW with a 3 year warranty. The £499 for the 77D at HDEW is pretty good too.

Also possible around black friday time is the Canon autumn/winter cashback. No way of guessing which models will have it but the combination of cashback and black friday sales prices can result in some bargain prices.

Winter cashback isn't though...
And winter cashback is often the double cashback. Definitely last year and some previous years.  I got my 750D in an amazon lightning sale coupled with a double winter cashback of £100 in 2015.
