Hi all
I need some advice ive been running an ancient A6 3500 Apu as my main workhorse downloading, browsing and using kodi to manage my locally stored video files.
Its served me fantastically for many years, perfect 1080p playback on all files and even doing the duties for Atmos Dts X.
Now with the arrival of 4k hdr and my other half needing a better pc (the one shes using is over 10 yrs old) ive arranged for her to have my old media pc and therefore its time for me to do a new build for myself.
Now ive dropped a Nvidia 1030 into my aging htpc and it just about handles 70% of 4k hdr mkv rips
the other 30% i have to switch to my 1080ti equipped gaming machine and play.
Netflix isnt a consideration as i get 4k hdr, Dolby Vision and Atmos through my Tvs internal app and receiver.
i just want flawless 4k hdr mkv playback, i always planned to go with amd's new apu's for this but i cant find a conclusive answer to my query as all reviews focus on fps in games.
i dont want to go by the specs of the video decode engine as if that held up the 1030 would be adequate.
My preferred setup would be a mini itx with ryzen apu in a small unobtrusive case if not a cheap pentium matched with a 1050ti or maybe even a zidoo x8 with a cheap mini pc for everything else.

I will be pulling the trigger on this setup later on in the month HDR MKV play back I am unsure off as you say very little info out there at the moment. One thing I will mention though is buy a gigabyte motherboard as they are all HDMI 2.0b certified if you intend to go down that route.

I use my Nvidia Shield and Kodi for all my UHD HDR Movies and works practically flawlessly, I would if I had the cash available scrub the 1050ti which is about the same rrp as the Shield then share you're windows PC to the shield via Kodi ... Done.

Edit: Windows I would NOT use windows 10 for sharing to Kodi I had to switch to Win8, Win10 sharing was abysmal and I got that hacked of with it I switched.

Ok for the benefit of anyone else who wants to know I went ahead with this build.
I used an Asrock AB350 mini itx/AC motherboard, Ryzen 2400g 8gig ddr4 and a 250gb Samsung Evo m.2 hard drive all housed in the lovely Inwin Chopin case.
I can confirm that the hdr toggle shows in Windows 10 as long as your updated to at least the first Spring Creators Update (another is due any day) and it has played 95% of my locally stored 4k hdr 10 bit movie files, the few it hasn't played I'm sure is a software issue not a power issue.
Also full Atmos and Dtx and all other sound formats are passed correctly to my receiver.
So I'm a happy camper, apparently Amd have announced a play ready driver for early first quarter so hopefully that will up the streaming from paid apps capabilities, if these chips could do 4k, 4k hdr, and  Dolby Vision streaming they would be htpc perfection.

Hi @jaxter , Regarding the 5% that you can't play, what is the file size of your file?  I am currently the 1030 user.  I found out gpu will be 100% utilization when I use full screen under madvr mode while size is greater than 50GB folder size.  To fix that problem, I pick RX580 as my video card.  The problem is my hptc will become a big system at my tv stand.  Mini-itx is much better option.  So, I am wondering what is the real capability of this 2400G CPU.  As you said, by spec, 1030 should work by spec.  However, it's not base on my testing.  If I use madvr filter and play rip file greater than 50GB, screen will start to stutter.
