MacBook Pro audio conundrum with Sony TV

I have an old (early 2009) MacBook Pro laptop. Apple long since stopped supporting it with OS X updates, but it runs Windows 10 Pro just fine!

It features a Mini-DisplayPort output, but this only supports video (1080p/60). It does not however support audio via the Mini-DisplayPort (its a very early implementation). It has a standard 3.5mm stereo audio jack, and this outputs audio just fine - but I have a problem:

I want to connect it to a new Sony TV. But, the Sony TV *only* has an HDMI input. There's no secondary method of connecting the audio source.

I thought I would be able to find an adapter/converter which would take the video from the Mini-DisplayPort, and combine it with the audio from the 3.5mm stereo jack, and send the combined  video/audio as an HDMI output, but I can't fine anything... :-(

There are lots of adapters that will split HDMI into separate audio and video, but seemingly nothing that can combine.


Does anybody know of anything available?

Try terms like audio injector or audio embedder.

Although I'm not sure if you'll find one that also does DP to HDMI conversion, you may need an additional device to convert to HDMI first (an Active Adapter, assuming your laptop doesn't support Dual Mode and can output an HDMI signal through the DP port).

Don't assume the injectors have HDCP support. If you want to output copy protected content you'll want to look for explicit mention of HDCP.

Audio injector/embeddler did the job. Thanks for the search tip.

The CYP-AU-11CA (they call it an Audio Inserter) does exactly what I need. Only downside is the price: £146.20 (inc VAT). So I'll have to decide how much I actually want to do it.
