I didn't realize that adobe has gone down the subscription route for some of the features, this makes it quite expensive if you are just using it for fun.

Large companies are very good at getting things wrong, as they don't have the paying-customer in mind when they do things.
It's true that having a cloud-based program will mean it's fully up-to-date....or it may mean it's thoroughly hacked.
Many folk like the idea of having their files on their computer and don't wish to gain Cloud-storage, as this means you are "giving away" something of value . . . it could be hacked, or the data-stream interrupted, perhaps.
Smaller vendors will stick with having all software on yr PC - so you can use your own storage ( or the Cloud), as you see fit.  But their Accountants will see a huge loss of PROFIT by this means, since once bought the User can wave goodbye..... the Subscription Model increases profits dramatically, so they won't care if a few "Diehards" are lost in the process.
Anyone that stops using the software, still pays . . . that has to be a good Business Model!

However, I'm not sure if folks can't "borrow" their friends' software - by spoofing, or similar . . . so you use the software in the mornings and someone else has it for a hour at lunchtime... etc.

But what this Big-Model does;  it allows smaller Vendors to creep in... maybe even re-thinking the process of EDITING - so folks will give it a try and maybe stop their subscription  when they get round to it .
- The result is the Big Player doesn't notice, since their Sales Team is only concerned with making more money and any Buyer-questions / complaints will be ignored.

Look at some of the largest Companies  that are irrelevant now . .   Polaroid, Kodak - can you imagine what went on in their Boardroom just before they failed?   A few Executives may have Retired before the Big Day.... but others were happy to go to work in  the Company Car and do very little "work" for what was by then an unsustainable salary.
Perhaps no-one in the Boardroom was allowed to tell it like it was.... for fear of being fired by the Big Cheese.... If the Company was set-up correctly they would have always had a secret ballot, so any issues would be noted in the Big Ledger, long before they became critical.

PS. Don't think "Digital Cameras" killed Kodak - they had brought out some of the first  - but somehow thought it wouldn't catch on, I guess.
