Remember audio is not integrated with the video signal if you are using the s-video connector. The white/left and right/red phono plugs still have to be connected, although the yellow/composite one is not required.
To confirm that there is indeed audio coming from the playback device, can you record audio on it's own, by connecting just the audio output from the player directly to the line input of your sound card?......
