So - tell me about TV's :)

TVs are low in priority when it comes to home entertainment - but I've come to the conclusion that I should at least update the 32" Panasonic CRT TV in the lounge at least (nothing wrong with it though).

So chaps - in reality - do LCD or LED TVs really beat a class leading CRT TV of its day? I'm not talking about HD because that's obvious - I'm talking about colour dynamics, contrasts and blacks etc.

I have the opportunity of buying a class leading 37" (in 2009 at least when it was made) Panasonic LCD TV for just £75. Seems like a good time to swap out the CRT for this LCD considering how low in price this LCD TV is.

I'm far more into audio than TVs so - yeah - I'm a cheapskate when it comes to visuals but tend to spend a lot on home audio instead.

So - should an excellent (in its day) 2009 Panasonic LCD be better than a far older high end (in its day) CRT (don't laugh)?

Nothing to laugh about. I changed last week my 15 years old toshiba crt for a Pana oled.

I stil love my crt but it was time...I will miss some aspect of crt but the gain far outweigh the negatives

Perfect tv doesn’t exist yet but we are getting very close..

So, unless you can’t handle the burn in risk, I will not hesitate a micro second

You also have good fald lcd to play with.

Édit: i am also a hifi guy so don’t buy too cheap...if you keep 5-7 years, spend at least around £1k...oled c8 or pana 802 will do nicely...or Sony xf90 for less

So this is interesting Goldorak - in order to improve your CRT experience you had to jump all the way up to an OLED!!

Are you implying that a high end LCD is still not competitive with a high end CRT?

The exact LCD I am considering is a Panasonic TX-L37V10B - replacing a 32" Panasonic CRT Quintrix SR Acuity (my brother-in-law still has his 37" Quintrix)!!

I've just got a strange feeling that the following could be true in terms of ranking (IGNORING definition) when it comes to contrast, blacks and colour...

1st place CRT (if only they could make a HD CRT).
2nd OLED
3rd PLASMA .... then a huge gap awaits for the 4th and 5th place positions...

.
4th LED/LCD
5th LCD

So perhaps I've answered my own question? But we all need HD TVs, electrical efficiency and slim designs. Note however that even if HD is also taken into consideration perhaps PLASMA still reigns above LED/LCD and LCD...

I don't know - you tell me.

It is not as black and white and I don’t see it in term of ranking.
In 15 years, I should have bought a plasma and also a couple of good fald.
What stopped me wasn’t the technology but the advances in the ecosystems

We had SD to HD to ultra HD to 8k recently. Same time hdr and hdmi 2.1 came at 2 different stages and made me falter...and wait...too long...
To that, you add a more silent revolution around the tv acting as a hub...with an onslaught of issues and os updates...

So my point is you don’t judge a car only by the horsepower (some do) but a combination of complex factors. Same with tv

Subjectively, you are right by saying only an oled could replace my crt but that’s not it. We arrived at a stage of tv technology and ecosystem where my crt or any old plasma or even hd lcd can’t follow...simple as that...
I don’t have hdmi, no hdr, no 4k, no wider color gamut...

The best picture I have ever seen: plasma
The best motion: crt
The best contrat: Oled
The best hdr: lcd fald and oled

Lcd fald should be significantly cheaper than oled but this latter technology managed to beat it for small sizes...
Tells you how much some are greedy...

So it is funny but it I could easily have a plasma with current technology if it existed...
I fear burn in but lcd needs 2-3 years to adopt mini or micro led properly and give you the real stuff. 4k needs to become more mainstream like hd today...

I got an oled for less than £1k and lcd fald are more expensive than this...no brainer
I will enjoy for 2-3 years hopefully

OK after fiddling more with all sorts of setting I noticed that I left my Humax which connects to this Panasonic TV to 720p manually - this was to compensate for the LG TV I had hooked up to it (which is only a 720p plasma). However, when I configured the Humax back to 1080p the picture on this old LCD panel was massively improved!!

It now quite obviously canes the CRT TV in all areas (and my 50" Plasma for that matter)! All it took was setting the TVs connected equipment to allow the TV to work at its native resolution.

Now its far more of a "wow" moment for me! I did indeed bag a good one here

Based on my experience I went along to a local retailer so I could look at the latest and greatest TV's and came away disappointed!

I started by looking at low cost TVs thinking that the latest tech - even if low cost - should give a good showing - it did not. I had to move all the way up to an OLED TV to get acceptable results - my main bug bear even with the OLED TV is that 1080p gives a poor showing on its 4k panel - I don't know if that's acceptable!
