Wrong time to buy?

Finally decided to upgrade to 4k and it appears I may have picked the wrong time?

I've discounted OLED as our lounge is bright with lots of windows so brightness and low reflection is key.

It seems that the 2019 Samsung range is poor value compared to previous models and I would have to go q80 to get the anti reflective screen. Hisense have dropped the ball and not brought a FALD model to the UK.  Nanocell is edge lit and the x950g has poor software.

Are there any other options I've missed or is it indeed a bad year to pick up a led set?

It's not the year, it's the time of year. TVs typically release in the second quarter (March/April/May/June) at high prices and then drop in price until the same time in the following year where they're discontinued. So the prices are high at this time of year.

For comparison the 55" Q8DN was around £2000 this time last year. If you look at the £1300 or whatever it went down to on clearance it looks better value, but not like for like.

There is never a good year to buy.
Best period is between now and q1 2020
All 2020 tv are announced in sept and mark the beginning of 2019 decline (starts earlier sometimes)
Samsung are notoriously expensive in U.K. but they do drop eventually...Q90r better in many ways but depends on price
Don’t know why you say Sony has defective software...you mean OS? Latest tv is very good unless I missed something

Do not disregard Oled. I have a very bright room and my pana is more than enough...
Latest LG, Philips and pana are more than enough bright. Sony Oled are more expensive in general

Some very well positioned blinds will cover the rest of the time it is too bright.

If you in doubt, wait to see a glimpse of the future 2020 TVs this month and then you make your mind.

Thank you both for the input, I think you're right about discounting OLED too early.  Been reading another thread and the pana 802 looks a very decent option with good brightness levels so might go and have a look at that one

Didn't Samsung and Sony announce their 2019 range in Feb-March time this year, with releases shortly after? Surely we won't expect to hear about their 2020 range until the same time next year?

I got mixed up
Some TV concepts or prototypes are shared in sept, Sony used to even release the big ones (Samsung did a 55 8k this year)
BUT you are right. The Las Vegas event in Jan is the real stuff.

I have come to the conclusion that there is never a right (perfect) time to buy (at least for AV and tech in general).  You no sooner find and buy what you think is best, then a few months later there is something else out that has something just a bit better.  I doubt this will ever end

         There is never a best “year” to buy BUT there is definitely a best “period” to buy.
It starts from sept Y1 up to Black Friday/Boxing Day then it is tv price free fall q2 Y2 where all the Y1 stock make space for Y2 new crop (announced usually in jan Y2 and hit shelves April to June).
To resume, best time ever is that first quarter in any year ...but Black Frida/end of year not bad too..
