As the title says I currently have 58inch dx802b and I’m really tempted by the q90r but I would like people thoughts/experience on if if it’s a significant upgrade.  Unfortunately I have to avoid oled due to my love of sky sports news and the other half’s habit of watching sky news for hours at a time I really couldn’t handle the stress of constantly fearing the dreaded burn in, so any thoughts would be appreciated on wether it’s a good move or I should stick with what I’ve got.

Very hard one indeed. I assume you want a 65
I was in the same boat related to Oled burn in
I will not bore you. Here are what I believe are your options:
1. Stay put: you worked out that one. Basically wait for mini or micro led. Option 1a. Keep your pana 1b. Buy a cheap lcd fald from Sony or Samsung (not Q90r). This is just good quality stop gap territory...
2.get an oled but at bottom price...so risk is ok if issues...they have improved a lot.
This means you need to buy 2018 oled or wait for q1 2020 for 2019 prices to collapse. My 55 reached £850 from £2700 (65 reached £1300 from £3300)
3. Get Q90r but wait for q1 2020 so it is very cheap. Plus jan 2020 ces will give you an idea how far mini and micro led are.
Can’t think of anything else...

If you ask me, I will definitely wait for q1 2020 post ces in all scenarios...(double lcd are gaining traction too alongside mini led)

One last point to keep in mind, once you go pana, hard to try anything else...

Q70 upwards will be an improvement with contrast/black levels. They’re also far brighter than the DX802. Basically the only thing that’s worse is sound.

Sony have the XF9005 or XG9505.

Respectfully disagree with @Goldorak re oled. I’d ignore it completely given your usage. If you’re not bald now you will be if you get an oled!

FUlly agree with everything
Did I mention I was/am bald like a baby
On a serious note, Oled is a calculated risk for me as nothing comes close for now
But the lcd you mentioned up to q85 are superb alternatives

Don't hold your breath for home-sized LED displays. LED display manufacturers have been working on shrinking them for years and Samsung recently chose to use OLED as a base for developing QDCFs so even they don't think they can throw enough money at it to get it cracked within a couple of years.

More dimming zones, so called mini LED backlights, are possible but as they've hovered around 500 zones since the DX902 the engineers don't seem to have been in any hurry to increase them, which makes you wonder how much of a limiting factor it actually is.

@gibbletts The big question is how much HDR stuff you watch. That's where the biggest improvements are to be had. If all you watch is SDR stuff like Sky then I'd stick with your DX802.

Thanks for the replies so far, I’m still undecided, the recent offer where you get the q70r soundbar for free seemed like a good deal and got me interested but if I’m not getting a major improvement maybe I'll just hang on.

Richer sounds have the 55” Sony XG9505 for £999. Seems a bit of a bargain to me and Sony’s top FALD this year. It’ll improve greatly on black levels and motion, has great peak brightness for HDR and finally has the processor to handle Android well.

I’m buying one!
