Recommendation for new phone

My current phone is an HTC M8, and I made this choice for the specific reasons:

- Android
- I got it 2 years after its release, as I was looking for a phone that ages well (performance does not degrade fast with time, I want it to keep up for at least 3 years), and that also made it really affordable
- Great design, compared to other android phones
- Reasonable size, as I want to be able to have my phone in a pocket

If I am looking for the equivalent of the HTC M8 of that time, what is the current most similar phone ? Basically I want something I can rely on when I travel. I don't play video games, browse and navigate (maps) a lot, and could invest around 400-500$.

Google Pixel 2 maybe? If you travel a lot, you will take advantage of its excellent camera.
