Nintendo announced a deal with Japanese mobile phone gaming giant DeNa this morning to bring Nintendo IP to mobiles. Games are going to be tailored for the mobile market, rather than simply being ports of existing games, and will be released as part of a subscription model.

Sub model could be interesting here, what will Nintendo offer other than some mobile games I wonder, can't see them only doing mobile stuff or many people paying a sub for just that anyway. Could they actually be considering a psn or Xbox live style plan I wonder

I think subscription models are popular in Japan and S.Korea so it may only apply there.

Although, Iwata said in an investor's meeting in (I think) early 2013 that they wanted to make a payment proposition that rewarded fans who play a lot of games. At the time people thought it might mean a subscription model like Playstation Plus. Maybe the new console uses that type of model and the mobile stuff is an extension of that - if you pay monthly for the console stuff the mobile content is included too.

Edit: Just read the Engadget report, looks like my guess was right!
