Question Do you need the official controller to setup a Xbox one ?

I have a Razer Wildcat controller for the Xbox one but is a wired controller only. I'm looking at buying a xbox one on the cheap without the official controller. Does anybody know if its possible to setup a Xbox one not using the official controller.
