Download speed?

I’ve been running some TP-Link AV500 Powerlines for a while now but after checking download speeds on the Xbox One X I’ve found it faster going WiFi, please see the results below. My question is this because they a more slow powerlines or because I’m getting a good wireless connection? My One X is in the bedroom and the router is downstairs in the living room so wouldn’t have thought WiFi would have been that good. I’m on Virgin Media 100MB.

The answer is both!

The wireless is 5GHz so maintains its speed very well (providing its not going through lots of walls, 2.4GHz is better through walls).

Powerline adaptors vary in quality and will always suffer some kind of signal degradation unless you’re spending megabucks.

So is the wireless speed I’m getting perfectly adequate? Only reason I’m asking is I’ve just built a pair of gaming PC’s for my son, there in his bedroom however I forgot totally about the network side of things. I’ve used H110 itx boards and they don’t include WiFi so my options are powerlines or WiFi dongles. Now if I can get a faster/fast enough connection wireless I would rather opt for that. I’ve been scratching my head over running cables for the last 12months but it’s not going to work without looking messy or costing a fortune. Thanks for your help!

Also is 80 Mbps in the Xbox test 10MB? That would be poor for 100MB wouldn’t it?

The Virgin broadband speed is 100Mb not 100MB.

Your Wireless speed you’re getting there is the full speed your line can provide. (Actually you’re getting 107Mb so your doing well).

The wired Power Line connection is running at 80%

For the gaming PCs, if he is running FPS shooters online then you’re going to want to run an Ethernet cable to ensure the latency is as low as possible otherwise he won’t have the best advantage.

Wireless will be OK but you would need to get 5GHz adapters to ensure you get the best possible speeds.

Quick question, why have you built him 2 gaming PCs?

Thanks for the retailed response! So that’s good going for a wireless connection then, plus the letancy is lower wireless which I didn’t expect. Netgear do some dual band USB adaptors that are AC1200 so was thinking of getting a pair of them, it also seems a cheaper option then going for faster powelines for no gain. I’m using Virgins HUB 2ac and from reading the net it seems a better device than the HUB 3 and it’s made by Netgear also.

Regarding the 2 PC’s, my son had a pair of Xbox ones with two monitors for when a friend comes around or if I’m playing with him but he likes playing Minecraft Skywars which is pc only so decided to have a dual pc setup. He sold some of his lego to fund it and I paid towards some parts for his birthday. We always had network problems with the two Xbox’s running together as well, I also have my own Xbox one x as well so it caused all kinds of issues if we had Three on at once.

Quick question please? What would be a good latency to aim for? I only use the wireless on my one x and play battlefield 1 and I seem to get ok scores, nothing amazing but mostly in the top 4 on my side if playing team deathmatch.

The lower the better, I get around 30ms on my Xbox One X on a wired connection.

I get 12ms on my iPhone 7 Plus over a 5G connection

But on my PC I get 7ms on a wired connection.

I’m on 100Mb Virgin on a Superhub 3

For virgin media I use the TP Link 1200 homeplugs. I have the gamer package(200 meg,20 meg upload) and its never missed a beat... Everything in my house is on a wired connection apart from my mobile phone and tablet.
