Hi. I've quite out of touch with the latest console stuff. I'm still using an Xbox 360 with a bunch of games with physical discs. Thinking about upgrading to an Xbox One X now that I've gotten a 4K tv. I had a look and a good portion of my games are on the Xbox One games backward compatibility list and there's one that's on the Xbox One X enhanced list (Gears of war 3).

My questions are:
Is the backwards compatibility list for just physical games, downloaded games or doesn't it matter? How will my 360 compatible games that are on disc work in the Xbox One X? Will it play directly off the disc or does the disc allow the equivalent game to be downloaded to the One X?With my GOW3 game, how will it allow me to play the 4K enhanced version from my 360 game disc? Is it the same #2 or some other way?If the 360 discs just unlock a way to download the equivalent game to the One X, will I need to insert the disc every time to play the game? Many thanks

Backwards Compatible games run as good as or even better in some cases than the original hardware, and with the One X they get even more enhanced with 4K such as Red Dead Redemption as being a prime example.

But do they play off the disc or will it unlock a downloadable version of the game?

It downloads the newer version from XBOX LIVE but you will need the disc to authenticate just as you do with One games currently.

1, Doesn’t matter wether it’s physical or digital.
2, once you put the disc in the one x if the game is in the back compatibility list it will download the update for the game to the one x from what I remember it was around 8gb for modern warfare 2. You need to insert the disc each time you want to play the game if it’s a physical copy.
3, same as 2, disc in the one x and you’re good to go.
4, Yep, disc every time for physical copies.

Hope that helps.

Yes that's really helpful. One follow up, is that the same for Xbox One games on disc too? Will the game disc allow you to download the game too or will it just play off the disc? (I suppose it may also allow you to install the game to the HDD too).

With physical copies of games you will always require the disc to play the game.

When you load the game up for the first time it will install the game onto the hdd this is not something you can choose to do, any physical copy will always install straight to hdd upon putting the disc in the drive for the first time.
The disc is solely used for licence authentication to prove you own the game.
