Hi. My samsung q70 has some gaming features I only seem to be able to access when connecting xbox one x directly to tv.
If I want to play through my Yamaha receiver I lose these features.
So I was thinking of connecting xbox to tv via hdmi, then running the sound through optical to receiver.
Are there any sound formats that I will lose via optical?
And what audio settings should I use on the xbox one x? Bitstream or 5.1?

By using optical you will be limited to lossy audio formats like Dolby Digital and DTS so just select one of those and you will be fine.

Thank you, are you suggesting use optical and then select dolby digital or dts?

Exactly, picking either of those options will allow you to get surround sound.
