PlayStation Plus on a sub account

There's probably a simple answer to this but here goes.

My step son has a PS4 and recently bought a years PS Plus subscription with birthday money. I game on a PC so I'm not really up on all thing PS.

He has a sub account and I have the master. I can't seem to find a way of applying the PS Plus sub to his account. I've upped his monthly wallet cap but there's no option to redeem the code on his sub account.  

I don't want to apply the code to my master account if it means he can't access the content with his account.

Any ideas?
