Well, I finally did it.
I bought a Dreamcast several years ago off these very forums. I ran it for a while but it started failing to read discs. I'd bought a new, sealed, copy of Sega Marine Fishing (NTSC) which I'd never unwrapped because the machine wasn't ready to play US/Jap discs. I just left it sitting there on a shelf in our cinema room, sitting forlornly next to the N64 and Gamecube. For 6years.
I'd been messing about with a Raspberry Pie and installed Retropie with a few cool games for the kids and started thinking about the Dreamcast again. So, back on to the web, found some turorials on fixing Dreamcasts and got to work.
It was pretty straightforward. The laser needed more power. Put my multimeter on the potentiometer and decreased the resistance to 0.640 k Ohms . Put it all back together and hey presto! All working good.
I'd forgotten how hard Sega Rally 2 was! Then got Chu Chu Rocket out - the kids loved it. In the meantime I burned the Utopia v1.2 bootloader and then the moment of truth - out came the sealed Sega Marine Fishing, off came the cellophane and, six years after buying it, I was reeling in fish in glorious technicolour using my Fission controller.
I know you can do it all on emulators but there's something great about resurrecting an old machine and having fun....... |
