Convenience. For many, myself included, it's far easier and more convenient to get all your produce/groceries in the same place, where it's easy (and usually free) to park and at times that suit people to go (such as 10pm, or the early hours of the morning) rather than go to local shops where parking can be an issue/not free. Then there's cost - it's often more expensive to shop locally than supermarkets. And also there's variety - supermarkets often have more variety, as well as stock, than local shops.

Then unfortunately you have to accept the pretty naff quality of super market produce but I full understand where you both are coming from.
