Are burgers supposed to look like pyramids?

Thought I'd have a whack at cooking some burgers.

Are they homemade or pre-made? I've had it happen before with homemade and it's because I'd left a tiny air pocket in the centre of the patty, which expanded as I put them on the grill to cook. This led the pyramid appearing.

I've had it with shop bought under the grill. Never with home made but then I always pan fry now.

Make a dent in the centre of them with your thumb before cooking. Should stop the pyramid effect.

Poke a hole in them to let the fat out.
