I'm interested in learning to play the bass. What would be the best one to start with? I've seen a few combo sets with amp, plectrum etc,

Hi, it depends somewhat on your budget I suppose. You should be able to pick up a decent Precision style bass, combo, cable and picks sub £190. Also cracking used deals can be had on Gumtree and eBay.

These are big instruments so one thing to clear up would be the scale length to choose. A small framed guy may go for a short 30" scale, other than that the norm is 34". Maybe go to a shop and just get a feel.

Here's mine next to a 6 string.

I've never liked the styling of the Squire/precision type basses, I don't like pick guards or cloverleaf tuners.
Yamaha RBX basses are extremely good and start off cheap (under £150.00)
Ibanez GSR basses are good for the money too.
These are all long scale, I want my bass to look like a bass, not a guitar.

Can't believe this didn't attract FZR's favourite Kenneth Williams pic...
