Loved His Dark Materials trilogy back about 20 years ago. Told the tale of a little orphan girl called Lyra Belacqua who's raised within the walls of Oxford University and all its grand colleges. The Subtle Knife was, if I'm remembering correctly, my favourite of the trilogy. I loved the fantasy landscapes of the second novel. Also has one of the greatest cover arts of all time - Mystery and Melancholy of a Street by Giorgio de Chirico is haunting and full of horrific potential.
