Am I in trouble?

I clipped a car in a car park causing some damage to my car but very very minor damage to the other vehicle bumper, what looked like some stone chips.

I panicked a bit(Those that know me on here know what a complete stress head I am) and drove into a parking space further away to see the damage on my car. I then drove back to the other car and after trying hard to find a pen and paper in the car left my details on the windscreen of the other vehicle.

However, because all i could think of was what it was gonna cost me and high premiums etc , plus the damage to my car that I have only had since July. i only left my first name and mobile number. Also didn't take the details of the other car or a photo as didn't have my phone

once i had got home i realised that i may had left the wrong number (wasn't thinking straight) . I drove back to the car park but the other vehicle had gone.

I also went in to the build car park and adked if anyone had been in to report an issue or to look at cctv.

I phoned the police to report the accident and was put through to control who said do it online. Both people at the police didn't seem at all bothered by the way.

I filled out the online form but of course didn't have any details on the other car apart from the type of vehicle, no reg or colour etc, and the time and location. I was given a reference number and an email saying it had been reported.

I am just asking if i could get in to any serious trouble?

I dont want to contact my insurance company unless absolute necessary as i wont be claiming for anything.

AM i likely to get in trouble from the police?

I know I was stupid....

Its keeping me awake at night and i have very little money to go to court .

I just couldn't remember my number properly when writing it down i didn't want to take the chance of the note coming off and it having my full details on it for some one to miss use in some way.i have been the victim of Id theft,  like i said , i wasn't thinking straight

No excuses ..

Was just wondering where I might stand ...

Please don't hate me...

Thanks

You don't have anything to worry about and most importantly, you haven't done anything wrong! These things happen... you realised you may have made a mistake and went straight to the police... if this comes back on you, and I doubt it will, then you have already covered yourself by getting a crime reference number.

The people you clipped won't be able to contact you with an incorrect number, their only way to follow this up is to go to the police who may contact you, and you have evidence of your mistake.

Just forget about it for now. I'd be surprised if you hear anything further... If the damage is so small they probably won't even bother contacting you, and if they did try, at worst they're probably a bit miffed as they'll think someone has intentionally wrong-numbered them... but with such a small amount of damage, it's unlikely they would report it.

Chill out first and foremost. No one is injured or hurt etc - It's only a car.

You left you name/number - nothing else you can do. Lots of people would just have drove off.

Don't worry about it - if you get contacted by anyone, which I suspect you won't as they would have done so by now, just deal with them politely and see where it goes.

I think you need to just take a deep breath and move on from this.

No one is going to court over a few minor scratches on a car.

You must report the accident to the police within 24 hours if you don't give your details at the time of the accident. You must also report the accident to your insurance company, even if you're not planning to make a claim.

from:  Vehicle insurance.

So you have covered yourself as far as the Police are concerned.

devils advocate here, I'm not that clued up about the law, but with this being on private land then he doesn't have to do anything?

couple of years back we were in sainsburys, the car park was very busy, and a car reversed out and a BMW got impatient of the going slowly that they drove around it and clipped the car...the BMW driver obviously thought for a second before driving away...

If you can drive in and out of it onto/from the Public Highway I don't think it affects anything.

My neighbour was hit by a car in the local Tesco. Driver of the other car denied everything and so she went to the police. Private land. Civil matter. Police were not willing to take any action as no one was injured.

Regardless of the legal repercussions, looking at the other side of things, I'd be pretty miffed if someone had "hit and run" on my car...then left a wrong number. I'd not like to be out of pocket for someone else damaging my property.

You've tried to do all you can. Maybe go back at the same time next week and see if you can spot the vehicle/damage? Leave a better note or wait for the owner?
