Partners new car issue

Hi all

My partner has a 68 plate new shape Audi A1. She got the car Feb this year and has done around 5500 miles. My issue is that theres already an oil warning light for low oil showing even after this small amount of driven miles.

Is this normal for new cars or should i contact audi?

Oil consumption varies from engine design, my bmw was a pint below max when I got it new, after 7k miles it still hasn't used any, depending how low it's got 5.5k miles and needing oil isn't unusual for some engines, top it up and monitor it or go in your garage and ask them to do it and ask if they think it's normal.

My wife’s Mazda uses a fair amount of oil and my friends brand new Audi A3 diesel used a litre regularly. Depends on the car.

If it were me i would be getting in touch with Audi ASAP.

Something wrong there chap, how can Audi expect a vehicle to go between, quite extended, service intervals using so much oil in only 5500 miles.

Better to get it checked, next thing oil pressure light will be on and then thats game over..............

In addition to what’s been said some new engines will use some oil for the first few thousand miles then settle down.

It sounds like it may have used about 1 litre in 5500 miles which would be well within spec. I’ve heard of manufacturers allowing 1 litre of oil per 500 miles before accepting there might be a problem.

Seem pretty normal for a VAG car to me. If I am not mistaken it is even written in the manual

There was that fella with an Audi A5 IIRC that used 1 litre / 1000 miles. Audi told him this was normal, he was impressed and abandoned his car outside the dealership.

Nissan's 1.2 turbo petrol engine was/is renowned for drinking oil.
Replaced quite a few of them and the number that came in for service with hardly any oil in them was embarrassing.
And even though Nissan knew there was a problem. they still charged customers for top up.
