There are certain things you want from a monster movie, this film doesn't really deliver any of them. It tries to be a comedy, a monster movie and a disaster film but doesn't really hit any of those marks.

The whole story makes little sense, which wouldn't be so bad if the film had pace, drama or characters of interest. Twenty minutes in I was thinking we haven't even got any characters yet, not knowing they'd never bother developing any of the characters at all.

The plot is convoluted and the five writers of this film just can't seem to write exposition dialogue. So you get things like a scene opening with overlaid text of location with company name on screen, followed by characters approaching company with big neon sign of the name on it, followed by the company name being mentioned over a speaker, followed by a short video advert seen on a computer about the company...

The Kong effects were quite good, at least he was a convincing character. Some of the rest made it hard to suspend disbelief, completely unconvincing water and snow, no weight or gravity to anything and buildings which just colapse into dust.

I enjoyed the 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' type sequence but even with that we have to keep cutting away to three people wandering around corridors. That subplot didn't really add anything other than the three annoying characters running around lost for much of the film and did we really need to drag in a robot as well?

It feels very much like a film made by committee where everyone keeps putting in ideas and you end up with a solid mess. I was bored from about fifteen minutes in and barely made it to the end, I wish I'd watched the 1963 film instead.
