This independent family drama takes a creative and colorful, tasteful look at trying to break cultural barriers in the fascinating sushi making field. A young Latino mother seeks to make a better living for her daughter and aging father by doing something more than a food cart after she has a violent encounter. The storyline much like The Ramen Girl (2008) which distinguished itself by having an American find herself stuck in Japan and ending up in a Ramen shop where only Japanese is spoken. In East Side Sushi, there is a closer look at American immigrants and the difficulty they face in moving up the economic ladder as well as racial discrimination by a racial minority. The independent cinematography enhances the story by offering up a more gritty, harsher authentic ambiance at times. Overall this is an entertaining, feel good movie that reveals a brief but valuable look at racial bias as well as those hard working people working behind the scenes and their possible aspirations that have even deeper meaning in today's contemporary political times.
