This beautiful, scenic gem of a film is the finest retelling of this story yet on film, and for once presents the King of Siam, Rama IV, as the enlightened monarch in the midst of an extraordinary effort to modernize his country. At the time the film was released the critics all panned Jodi Foster's performance, especially her accent, but I think that she did an excellent job as a Victorian English woman, trying to survive in a foreign world, and maintain her own values as well. The film was a visual delight, and the casting was superb. Although I own all three film versions of the Anna Leanowens Story, this is by far the best of the lot. I did note in the trivia that they said Tuptim was Thar for "Ruby." But in her book, the author claimed that it was Thai for "pomegranite."
