It's a commercial spicy masala pongal for the Tamil cinema industry, since two big stars launch their commercial movies at the same time. Nevertheless both of them where commercial mass entertainer so clearly no space for logics. So now let's see What Thala Ajith has come up with his commercial Pongal recipe for us.
Veeram on the whole has got no big fresh story line but the same 1990's style of Tamil rural base story has been presented in a refreshing way. So obliviously the same old wine in new bottle.
Director Siva has strategically handled the standard commercial template of cinema. A racy first half filled with typical Brother Sentiment- Comedy- Heroic Action-Romance. An engaging second half with Family Sentiment- Raging Action-Romance. Plus both sides had songs equally distributed.
Coming to the star cast first our Thala Ajith as Vinayagam after his continuous urban avatars is now seen on a rural make over. Our Billa was looking equally stylish in the traditional outfit. He has done full justice to his role starting from romance sentiment comedy and fierce action sequences.
Tammanah Bhatia as Koppu has given a comeback to Tamil cinema after her average grosser Venghai in 2011.Got to say this diva has still got the oomph factor in her. She had lots of screen space to perform a character in between a traditional and modern girl but I found her flawed in main emotional and crying sequences. But that doesn't stop me saying "Man she looked ravishingly beautiful".
When romance department was handled by Tammanah the comedy department was given to Santhanam who did fairly well with his jokes but though it was engaging nothing nailed your heart as a comedy. Nassar as a big shot and a peacemaker of a village entered lately but his performance was superb of course his acting skills are legendary. So moving on to the supporting role casting it had lots of actors, some of them where seen in both big releases of Pongal. As usual the technicalities of the movie had nothing big since it's a commercial venture aimed at satisfying all class audience. So nothing special for elite movie viewers. Music was below average as far as the songs. But BGM was racy.
Verdict: Director Siva's second Tamil Venture Veeram is undoubtedly a commercial mass entertainer for the whole family and particularly a true Thala pongal for core thala fans.
NB: Viewers who strictly stick on stuff and story based movies are advised to miss this flick for sure.
