This series' protagonist Tomoko Kuroki starts off as a shy middle school girl but she is certain that when she progresses to High School her shyness will pass and she will become popular… especially with the boys. Inevitably when she gets there she is just as shy as ever. Over the course of the series we see her wanting to get involved with others and make friends at her new school but her shyness prevents this and she just comes across as weird. She does have one friend but she now attends a different school so she doesn't get to see much of her.

This was my favourite series of the current anime season; despite the many awkward moments I laughed until I cried more than once. Tokoko is a likable protagonist and one can't help wanting things to go well for her even though they rarely do. There are also plenty of cringe-worthy moments; such as when she is convinced that she is being molested on a train and when she falls asleep in class and has an erotic dream! The fact that things like this occur means it isn't really suitable for younger viewers. While the character design is similar to many other series Tomoko has a distinctive look that perfectly captures her near permanent state of stress; this is further helped by the way she is voiced by Izumi Kitta; she does a really great job.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.
