Just wanted to add my praise for this relatively unknown movie. It is showing on Tubi channel on my Roku tv currently (2/20). I'm a long-time fan of creepy, suspenseful but not gory movies and love b & w films, too. Surprised that I'd never seen this one before coming across it on Tubi. Other reviewers have already summarized its charms. I guess I would call the genre it belongs to "cozy horror" - taking off on the well-known "cozy mystery" books of such as Agatha Christie. It does have its moments of suspense and thrills, and personally - although the Witch did a fine job acting menacing without hamminess - I would have liked to see her be a little more gruesome-looking. After all, she'd been buried for 300 years! And as others mentioned, Lon Chaney seemed a bit out of place, but you have to give the guy props - he is an icon and gets away with some overacting.
Overall, highly recommend this well-paced, well-acted classic thriller. It's not one where you wait and wait for anything to happen - the thrills start right off and continue throughout. It deserves to be better known.
